Gannett's NBC station has been producing news content for Sinclair's ABC affiliate since Jan. 2011
It looks like the end of the line is in sight for news on St. Louis ABC affiliate KDNL-ABC 30 — again.
KSDK, Gannett's NBC station in St. Louis, which produces newscasts for KDNL, has announced that it will quit doing so when the calendar flips from 2013 to 2014, according to a report in the Post-Dispatch last week.
No reason was given for the termination; Gannett, however was quick to point out that it has nothing to do with the company's pending acquisition of KMOV owner Belo Corp.
As for what KDNL will do for news, should Sinclair Broadcast Group (the station's owner) decide it wants to keep offering it, there's no word. "We haven't decided [what we'll do]," station GM Tom Tipton told the P-D. "We won't make a decision anytime soon, probably the third or fourth quarter."
KDNL's current news incarnation dates back to 2011; the station's KSDK-produced offering was its first in a decade. The 5 p.m. edition was, at least for a while, anchored by former NEWS 25 anchor/reporter Courtney Gousman, who is now at CBS 2 Chicago.
Sinclair shut down its own news department in St. Louis amid sagging ratings in 2001.
